Teaching My Child to Pray: A Journey Into the Deep

As a parent, one of my greatest desires is for my child to know God—not just to know about Him, but to have a real relationship with Him. I’ve always wanted my daughter to feel the same comfort, strength, and guidance in prayer that I’ve found in my own walk with God. But as I began teaching her to pray, I quickly realized something: I didn’t just want her to memorize prayers—I wanted her to understand how to pray.

For many of us, the first prayer we teach our kids is the Lord’s Prayer. It’s beautiful, biblical, and given to us directly by Jesus. But if we’re not careful, it can become just another set of words they recite without truly knowing their meaning. I didn’t want that for my daughter. I wanted her to see the Lord’s Prayer as more than a bedtime routine—I wanted it to be the foundation of a lifelong conversation with God.

Discovering the Power of the Lord’s Prayer

Jesus didn’t just give us the Lord’s Prayer to memorize—He gave it to us as a pattern for talking with God. When I first began breaking it down with my daughter, she started to see prayer differently. Instead of rushing through “Our Father who art in heaven,” she learned that she was actually talking to her Father—the One who loves her more than anyone else ever could.

Each part of the prayer took on new meaning for her:

  • Adoration: She learned that prayer starts with worship—recognizing God’s greatness and thanking Him for who He is.

  • Surrender: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done” became an invitation for her to trust God’s plan, even when things don’t go her way.

  • Asking for needs: She realized that “Give us this day our daily bread” means she can ask God for help with anything, big or small.

  • Forgiveness: She began to understand that just as she asks God for forgiveness, she should also forgive others.

  • Protection: “Deliver us from evil” helped her recognize that God is always watching over her, guiding her through life’s challenges.

How Into the Deep for Kids Helped My Daughter Make Prayer Her Own

I wanted to give my daughter a tool that would help her truly engage with the Lord’s Prayer, not just repeat it. That’s why I introduced her to Into the Deep Prayer Journal for Kids. This journal gave her a place to slow down, reflect, and make the Lord’s Prayer personal.

Each section of the journal helped her connect with God in a new way:

  • Writing and drawing prompts encouraged her to express her thoughts to God in her own words.

  • Simple explanations made each part of the Lord’s Prayer easy for her to understand.

  • Space to write out prayers helped her form the habit of talking to God daily.

Something amazing happened as she worked through the journal. She didn’t just learn how to pray—she started to love praying. She began praying on her own, beyond the pages of the journal. She prayed about her worries before bed, about her friendships at school, about things she was excited for. Prayer wasn’t just something we did together anymore—it became her way of connecting with God.

Helping Our Kids Access God for Themselves

As parents, we can teach our kids many things, but one of the greatest gifts we can give them is the ability to pray. Not just to say prayers, but to truly know that they can talk to their Heavenly Father anytime, anywhere.

The Lord’s Prayer isn’t just for church—it’s for their everyday lives. When our children understand why Jesus taught us to pray this way, they gain a foundation for a lifetime of faith.

If you’re looking for a way to help your child develop a real and meaningful prayer life, Into the Deep for Kids is a great place to start. It’s more than a journal—it’s a guide to help them experience God in a way that will stay with them far beyond the pages.

Because prayer isn’t about perfect words—it’s about drawing close to the One who loves them most.
